Oz smartens up its act for pampered players Years of player complaints about facilities are being taken to heart by Tennis Australia, with massive site improvement at Melbourne Park promised in time for the start of the Open from January 19.

Pampered players have said they are fed up with cramped quarters, poor catering, and not enough locker room and gym facilities at the 20-year-old venue.

Fearful of a backlash, tennis officials have jumped into action to save their showcase event to make sure players and their massive entourages are kept sweet.

The top PR official for Tennis Australia confirmed to the Times of London that change is afoot to the tune of more than $3 million.

"It includes a completely new player restaurant with good furniture, and a lounge/bar area," said Darren Pearce. "We've planned heaps of flat-screen plasmas, the food preparation area is bigger and better, the menu more expansive and, hopefully, the pasta cooked to perfection! I am pretty confident you will be impressed."
