Jimmy Connors has been charged by the Santa Barbara police with a misdemeanor following his arrest after a dispute while watching a basketball game last week.
According to his business manager, Connors was watching the game between Santa Barbara and North Carolina at the University of California with his son last Friday when a man tried to pick a fight. Police asked both to leave the stadium but Connors refused, saying he wanted to wait for his son to finish watching the game and was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.
He was charged on Tuesday with disrupting campus activities and refusing to leave a university facility.
The charges are likely to be punished with a fine.
Connors has released a statement saying he's “extremely disappointed and embarrassed about the incident.”
Connors was renowned for his fiery temper and confrontational behaviour during a glittering career which saw him amass 109 ATP titles and eight Srand Slams during the '70s and '80s. After over a decade away from the game, he returned to the sport in 2006 as Andy Roddick's coach, but they parted ways in March this year and Connors has not since been linked with any other players.
