Serbian officials are proceeding at a rapid pace to ensure that the new tennis facility for the country's first ATP event in May will be ready for its world debut.
The reconstruction schedule will have to run at nearly a 24/7 Asian pace, with the project set to begin only in mid-December, as the European winter - and possibly snow - sets in. Officials say the venue will include seven courts to be upgraded at an existing sport center.
The tournament is a pet project of local hero and world No. 3 Novak Djokovic, whose family bought the bankrupt Dutch Open in the autumn and got the deal approved by the ATP last month.
Luckily for the Djokovic clan, the government is picking up the construction tab for the $900,000 project, which is to include a 5,000-seat center court and two smaller ones with 3,000 capacity plus four auxiliary courts with detachable stands.
In addition, locker rooms, a gym, massage rooms, and medical and media
centers will also be brought up to standard. Access roads, parking lots, and shops will be brought on line and the adjacent area renovated so that the venue can be used for future training facilities.
