The schedule next year is overloaded and must be trimmed down. Although it is unlikely to happen, at the very least it should be contemplated.
Week 1- Doha/Chennai/Brisbane
Week 2- Sydney/Auckland
Week 3/4- Australian Open
Week 5- Vina del Mar/Johannesberg/Zagreb
Week 6- Costa Do Sauipe/Rotterdam/San Jose
Week 7- Buenos Aires/Marseille/Memphis
Week 8- Acapulco/Dubai/Delray Beach
Week 9- Davis Cup 1
Week 10/11- Indian Wells
Week 12/13- Miami
The first 13 weeks of the season are just fine. Nothing needs to be changed. Starting in the clay season, however, some changes need to be made.
Week 14- Houston/Casablanca/Warsaw: This should be Warsaw's location in the calendar as it lies straight in the clay season, making the event much more meaningful in the lead-up to Roland Garros.
Week 15- Monte Carlo
Week 16- Barcelona
Week 17- Estoril/Amersfoort/Munich: Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, and Madrid are the four biggest clay tournaments of the season. By adding a week of non-huge tournaments, its allows most players to rest up, giving Rome and Madrid rested and better players.
Week 18- Rome
Week 19- Madrid
Week 20- Portschach/Dusseldorf
Week 21/22- Roland Garros
The grass season will be extended by a week, giving players who advance far in the clay season a chance to have a solid week of rest before a new proposed grass Masters event.
Week 23- Halle/Surbiton: Surbiton is currently a huge grass challenger, won by Frank Dancevic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Mardy Fish in the past three years. It should be upgraded to a regular tour event.
Week 24- Queens TMS: Finally a Masters event on grass, extending the season and making the grass season more relevant and exciting. It would push the total Masters event to 10.
Week 25- Hertogenbosch/Eastbourne
Week 26/27- Wimbledon: Wimbledon will be moved back one week to encompass the new grass Masters. Doubtful that Wimbledon would agree to it, but a suggestion nonetheless.
Week 28- Newport/Davis Cup quarterfinals
The post-Wimbledon season will be shortened by a week in order to counter the extra week in London.
Week 29- Bastad/Stuttgart/Gstaad
Week 30- Hamburg/Indianapolis/Umag
Week 31- Washington, D.C.
Week 32- Montreal
Week 33- Cincinnati
Week 34- New Haven
Week 35/36- U.S. Open: The U.S. Open will be staged at the same time as last year, evening out the schedule.
Week 37- Davis Cup Semifinal
Week 38- Metz/Bucharest/Valencia
Week 39- Bangkok/Beijing/Tokyo
Week 40- TMS Shanghai
Week 41- Stockholm/Vienna/Moscow
Week 42- Lyon/St. Petersburg/Basel
Week 43- Paris TMS
Paris would be run the week of Oct. 26 and end Nov. 1. The year-end event in London would be from Nov. 8-15. The Davis Cup final would be the following weekend and the final match of the season would take place on Sunday, Nov. 22.
This schedule would be the same length as the 2008 season, but during the season there will be more periods of rest. Other suggestions and comments welcome.

Extending the grass season is a great idea. But I don't think that Queen's is the event which should become a TMS. London already has Wimbledon (only two weeks later) and the Masters Cup.
(And you should change Warsaw and Estoril. ;) In week 14, it's probably still too cold and wet for outdoor tennis in Poland)

Of course this is still a work in progress. ;)
Ricky, Newport is not really a high-caliber event. It is used more as a side show for the hall of fame inductions. I don't expect to see Federer and Nadal playing there anytime soon.
Zack, good thoughts on the grass season, but to me it just seemed that Queens would be the best place to hold a grass TMS (I'm still calling them TMS, I don't care what the establishment says).
Perhaps Halle could take the mantle, but whether or not their facilities are up to it, I do not know. As for the Warsaw/Estoril switch, that'd work just fine if the weather in Poland is such at that time.

Haha trust me I know what Newport is and isn't. I watch it religiously every year.
We're talking about the Davis Cup quarterfinals here, not the final. There will be EIGHT nations playing. That's 32 players, not even counting all the alternates and hitting partners. Without question some of those guys would otherwise have gone to Newport.
The two things that there aren't enough of in an ATP season are grass-court tournaments and Davis Cup. I don't see why we would put them at the same time and downgrade both of them.

JohnnyM, are you one more 'genius' among the others who're participating on this site, let me tell you one thing, tennis is not only Federer & Nadal playing, if I'm wrong, disproved me, it's not a question reserved only for these two guys, stop glorifying them, it's not appropriately, such an attitude like yours, insulting professional players and their fans, have you got my point???!!!
gordana , 11/26/08 10:37 AM
gordana, what are you on about?! what does that have anything to do with the article or the discussion in the comments?!
Jyocka , 11/26/08 1:11 PM
I havent insulted anyone, what are you on about, gordana? I used Fed and Nadal as an example
JohnnyM , 11/27/08 2:29 AM
Gordana- I think you want every one to be fair, but I think people's tones are lost in translation for you. He's not saying Tennis is all about Nadal and Federer, he was just saying that none of the big stars are likely to play there, which is true. This includes the other tennis stars as well. They are just the two best examples since they ARE the two best players in the world.
JohnnyM-- Sorry if I'm crossing any boundaries here.
Avalaine , 11/27/08 3:12 AM
avalaine, I understood excellently, as matter of fact, my English knowledge is quite good, so you don't have to be an interpreter, usually, in all statistics people mentioning first three places, not only two as JohnnyM & you have said, therefore, two of them are not the only stars, let me remind you and others, Novak is number three, his name should appear there, anyway, he'll be number 2 very soon, most probably, some of blind fans will mention only Nadal in that context, my dear, nothing personal but I'm enough old to read between the rows, I'm getting sick of false stories, favoured and gloryfing player as Federer is, about Nadal all the best, I already said, he's number one, he deserves that position, he's nice personality, he's humble and nice guy, so if you remember, few days ago I've wished you welcome on this site with designation, I won't let anyone insulting Novak at all, in my point of view, it was an insult, cause, JohnnyM didn't mention number 3 player, which Novak is, don't you agree with me, regards...
gordana , 11/27/08 9:30 AM
of course we don't agree
this article has nothing to do with Djokovic, so if you want to keep discussing him, do so on one of the articles about him. This article isn't about Nadal or Federer, either.
Let's get back on topic, which is the schedule.
RickyDimon , 11/27/08 2:20 PM
great stuff, Jonathan.
But I disagree that Newport and Davis Cup should be the same weekend. Davis Cup is already becoming smaller and smaller in terms of hype, importance. Conflicting it with ATP events would only add to the decline. Instead, Davis Cup needs to be rebuilt.
