Old entertainer John McEnroe says that today's men's tennis provides better value for money to spectators, giving a thumbs-down to the current WTA strategy of selling its players as all-purpose divas.
Mac said that even the perceived "domination" or Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal has not diluted the ATP product. "I think over the last five years the men's game has totally eclipsed the women's game as far as personalities go.
"A lot of women have retired. Obviously the Williams sisters, when they are motivated, they are probably the two best players in the world and create interest. But there's more personality among the men.
"I think it was disguised for a while because they thought it was getting out of control with the likes of me and (Jimmy) Connors."
McEnroe, who played this week with Federer, James Blake and Björn Borg at money-spinning exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur and Macao, cited Nadal, Brit Andy Murray, Australian Open and Masters Cup winner Djokovic and Mohammed Ali lookalike Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as crowd-pleasers.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mac added, "I think the game is on a real upswing and we should try to ride that. I'd like to see all that translate into a surge in popularity. I'm real hopeful about the next five, 10 years."

Djokovic is only being mentioned in passing. And they probably don't put a link, because they think everyone knows who he is enough for the article.
Tsonga's the only one that you would questioned getting link, but once more they probably only have a link for him because he looks like Mohammed Ali and they want you to check it out, possibly because they don't consider him as well known as Djokovic. If anyone was really curious they would go look him up.
Buuut I could be completely wrong.
Avalaine , 11/22/08 7:47 PM
Avalaine,
no offense, but it sounds to me like a pretty lame explanation. Andy (Cheryl) Murray was also mentioned in passing, but deserved a dedicated page. I know, this is IT era and there are various ways to get the various info about various topics, but this was done on purpose and iintentionally. The idea was to downplay the importance of N D as a result of their collective jealousy.
posmatrac , 11/22/08 8:56 PM
Fine. I'm just saying we can't be sure.
Let's try to think on the brightest side and suppose this articles would not be bias, even if they are.
Avalaine , 11/22/08 9:40 PM
Agree,
but those little sneaky tricks insult my intellingence.
posmatrac , 11/23/08 1:21 AM
Talk about paranoia!
What is more interesting is that there are so many crowd pleasers in the top 10. And many more coming up through the ranks with the promise of new rivalries to keep bums on seats and the rest of us glued to the tele.
ed251137 , 11/23/08 7:49 PM
Postmatrac, I actually don't understand what tricks you are implying.
Let me not disappoint if you were expecting one, thanks for thinking on the negative side once again. I honestly meant you no insult in my second post and neither in my first. Sorry if it came off that way. However this third one I do.
Avalaine , 11/23/08 8:46 PM
ed251137
you missed the topic so i won't bother replying.
Avalaine,
double standards is what bothers me, not your post.
posmatrac , 11/24/08 12:06 AM
It would be nice if they linked his name no doubt, but if anyone truly cared about tennis they probably would already know who he is.
In away all the linked names are kind of overkill, but maybe there are people who have not heard of Djokovic and it's mostly my opinion, which is obviously not fact.
Avalaine , 11/24/08 12:14 AM
Avalaine,
this is my last thought on this one. I agree with everything you said, 100%, but I still genuinelly believe that there was the intention to downplay certain players for some reason. I've been following this site for quite a while and noticed the trend.
Anyhow, who wants to get more info has plenty of ways for doing so.
I appologize for not being clear in conveying my thoughts.
posmatrac , 11/24/08 1:07 AM
Thanks. Maybe you were being clear and I was not comprehending. And I guess I'll have to watch and see if this trend is true.
Avalaine , 11/24/08 3:49 AM
Who cares about his stories, we do know who's Novak Djokovic, it's more than enough, you could find out those 'experts' are not able to make an article without OUR NOLE, so that's telling us something, it's very difficult for them to admit, Novak is great, just mentioning his name in a negative contest, but who cares, as I've said so many times, Novak is the best for us, however, he is going to be number 2 very soon, even if he gets first place, it will be too many of them who'd spit on him, it's their incompetence, whatsoever, inhumanity, NOVAK FOREVER...
gordana , 11/24/08 9:12 AM
Gordana, you are something. You like Djokovic more than I like Federer.
I wish I had your enthusiasm.
But try to think more positively, I sort of sound like a broken record, none of the players would spit on him (you may have used that in a metaphorical sense), he's number 3 for a reason, which is that he is very very good. And Number one and two, already know he plays too well not to watch out for him.
Avalaine , 11/24/08 9:56 PM
posmatrac, Avalaine - you have good command of the English language and yet its like the article was written using a Martian dialect.
At least gordana is true to herself... she LOVES Novac plain and simple!
You've posted so many blah blah blah, correcting each other and the others as if you understood anything!
READ AGAIN!- McEnroe cited Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, and Tsonga as CROWD PLEASERS.- nothing to do with stats or achievements whatsoever. Maybe he should have included your names bcos you make us laugh!
agf25agf , 11/25/08 12:28 AM
agf25agf - I fail to see how I did not comprehend the article, but I guess I must be missing something. I realized they mentioned the four as Crowd pleasers.
And I already realized my mistake with posmatrac, I wasn't really trying to correct her either, so much as suggest a different outlook. I don't think she was trying to correct me so much either. However, maybe you could be more specific.
Avalaine , 11/25/08 2:35 AM
And you make it seem as though I was insulting gordana. I was actually envying her loyalty and enthusiasm. Did you miss the second line? Maybe you misinterpreted the tone of my post or perhaps I misinterpreted yours.
Avalaine , 11/25/08 2:41 AM
Avalaine, having read some of your posts, I feel your inclusion in this forum is very refreshing. Your level-headedness and reason is an example to be observed and followed. Posts like yours and some others make this forum a good place to be for keeping up with the tennis and reading opinions. Appreciate your efforts.
jean , 11/25/08 2:59 AM
what truely nice words to be said of a nice Federer fan.
homos , 11/25/08 3:10 AM
Thank you. Now I'm gonna have to be extra careful though to live up those standards from now on. Heh.
I try not to be to bias towards Federer even though he is my favorite player. What's funny is the first time I saw him I actually was actually rooting against him.
Avalaine , 11/25/08 3:20 AM
yes..you definitely deserve a compliment..your way of handling certain discussions is definitely impressive..and something to learn from.
janhavi , 11/25/08 6:27 AM
coming back to the topic-I personally agree with JMac..but i feel that womens tennis needs to be encouraged...what the womens tennis according to me , is experiencing is not a lack of potential..but perhaps a bit of consistency ...and competitiveness..it needs a boost from fans and the past greats alike.
janhavi , 11/25/08 7:34 AM
avalaine, comparison between our love to devoted players are not acceptable, simply it's not possible at all, as far as I'm concerned, I'm more than positive, in spite of fact, some people telling the lies regarding Novak all the time, considering your comment, I haven't said, players spit on him, I'm talking about article, tennis experts who've their untouchable players like Federer, never mind if he's wrong or not, but him all the time, I'm talking about few people over here I even don't want to mention their names, they don't deserve it, then if you call it enthusiasm, that's OK with me, however, I'm realistic in my point of view, I do recognize the others, actually, I like several players a lot, after Novak, Nadal is my favourite, Simon, Tsonga in spite of fact, he's bitten Novak 3 consecutive times, but I do ADORE Novak, I don't have to talk about that at all, cause I've said that 10000 times, he simply deserve it, he is number 3 right now, having a good chance to be number 2, hey people, is not enough, isn't it, I do respect people who respect me, but I'll never let anyone to insult Novak, finally, I'm really very sorry, but I don't like Federer at all, and that's my business, never said he wasn't best player in the world, but not anymore, regarding his play I wasn't arguing, cause he was excellent, but his attitude, way of thinking, presenting himself in public, manners extc. no comment at all, so dear, I do have a hope, you've got my point...
gordana , 11/25/08 10:51 AM
Avalaine, sorry if i offended you or something, but I certainly agree with the other guys' comment about you - you're one of the most articulate and level headed guys who graced this site.
agf25agf , 11/25/08 11:18 AM
agf25agf,
two messages were conveyed in this article:
1. crowd pleasers - a message by respected McEnroe,
and a more subtle one
2. we are so f****** jealous on this Serbian guy, so let us be constantly malicious and treat him as a second league tennis player, even though he is 10 points shy away from R. F and 1500 pts ahead of our grumpy God Andy (Cheryl) Murray.
As a reply for your blah blah blah to my posts I can probably come up with something similar in regard to your, but why waste time?
posmatrac , 11/25/08 6:02 PM
Gordana - Are you offended somehow or am I reading you wrong? I was comparing, not contrasting if it makes you feel any better to not be like me at all. I meant you no harm. And I never said anything to imply that you insulted Federer or didn't give him the credit he deserved. I didn't even insult Novak, I'm not quite sure where your post has come off from. If I've done something wrong I'm sorry, but I don't see it. I was saying I wished to be as loyal a fan as you. And don't worry about not liking Federer, I don't mind. It makes it more interesting.
Janhavi-- Good job being on topic. I should try to do that. heh. I agree with your analysis of women's tennis. There isn't as much competition between them and not as many stars.
Avalaine , 11/25/08 10:27 PM
avalaine, regarding the woman tennis, just to remind you, Jelena Jankovic is number one, disagree with you no competition, how about Williams sister, Dinara Safina, Sharapova will be back in January, so there are very good players in spite of fact, there is no comparison with man tennis, and yeah, I'm not offended at all, just read my post properly, regards...
gordana , 11/26/08 9:42 AM
gordana- I didn't say there was NO competition. I just said it lacked the amount men's tennis has.
And I'm glad your not offended. I'm not good at reading tone through posts I suppose, if I misinterpreted you.
Avalaine , 11/26/08 10:45 PM
avalaine, somehow I do have impression you're quite nice lady, I admit, sometimes, I'm out of temper, but don't think nothing personally, I do respect your devotion to Federer, in spite of fact I don't like him, but I found out, I can manage commenting your posts without hard words, cause you have nice attitude and exactly know how to put the things on right place, so don't be angry with me, finally, you've said: 'There isn't as much competition...
gordana , 11/27/08 9:47 AM
Gordana-- Thank you. I'm not angry with you, I just am frustrated with some of your ideas on my ideas because I had never said that Women's tennis had no competition.
And Djokovic is awesome, despite the fact I don't like him much either. However he's growing on me and I'm looking forward to seeing him in battle with the rest of the big four in 2009.
Hopefully Women's tennis with be just as fierce this coming season too.

Johan Lindahl,
I guess Djokovic doesn't deserve that his name is linked to a page that will show his statistics but all others do. I guess this is not intentional, just a slight web admin's fault.
Welcome to the Djoko haters group, led by Cheryl (Andy) Murray and Ricky Dimon.
Cheers.
