The stakes were not high--at all--but Roger Federer defeated James Blake at the Showdown of Champions in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. John McEnroe and Björn Borg also participated.
In front of an estimated 6,000 fans at Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital city, Roger Federer defeated James Blake 7-6(10-7 super-tiebreaker) on Tuesday. The singles event between the two current top 10 players was part of a Showdown of Champions that also featured John McEnroe and Björn Borg.
"It was a good match as both of us played hard," explained Federer. "And the fans enjoyed it."
McEnroe, 49, and Borg, 52, preceded their younger companions with a singles match of their own, hoping to bring back memories of the epic 1980 Wimbledon final. Borg, of course, prevailed back then. On Tuesday, McEnroe pulled off a 7-6(13-11 super-tiebreaker) victory in 59 minutes.
"This is a special match as it reminded both of us of our past rivalry during the good old days," said McEnroe.
The night was capped off with a doubles match billed as America vs. Europe, as McEnroe and Blake took down Borg and Federer 7-5.

I'm so happy the USA kicked butt. Anyway it was very close so you can tell they are the best of their times.
At least Federer won his match against Blake. Don't get me wrong I love Blake, but Fed is the best.

I think its fair 2 say the players set these matches up to go to tiebreaks. I imagine they say something like, go to a tiebreak and see who can win from there. makes it more interesting for the crowd and theres nothing at stake.

True. No offense to Blake, he owned Fed at the Olympics, but I think Fed could have crushed him faster.

Yep, the truly surprising thing is that the doubles match DIDN'T go to a tiebreaker.
I can't imagine how bad Borg and Federer must have played during the 5-6 game.

I s'pose they just wanted to have fun out there...
