Power vs. power in this matchup with Roddick and Tsonga. Expect big serves, tiebreaks, and balls flying at warp speed.
These men play similar games. Power is the base for both of them, but they use it differently.
Tsonga has a massive serve, and with his 6'2'', 200 pound frame, he can get a lot of pop on it. His movement is also rather good for such a big guy. With that, he can strike forehand winners from every corner of the court. He's not a bad volleyer either, and can easily finish points at the net. In his match against Novak Djokovic, he flashed shades of net playing genius that Stefan Edberg and John Mcenroe would be proud of.
Andy Roddick uses his power in a different way. Roddick's serve is the fastest in the history of the sport and has effectively kept him in the top 10 for the past six years. His ground game has flashes of brilliance from year's past, but far too often he plays too passively with terrible court positioning. On a court such as this, where speed is of the utmost importance, whoever can strike first and strike hardest will take this match.
The crowd will be heavily in favor of Tsonga, and he needs to use that momentum to see him through the match. These two have played twice before, the most recent at the Aussie Open in 2007. That was a tight match, but Tsonga was nowhere near as good then as he is now. Tsonga by a hair in this one.
