2006 champion Nikolay Davydenko has sneaked through under the radar so far this week in Paris Bercy, but the No. 5 seed sent a warning shot to the favorites by crushing Tomas Berdych.
All the talk has been about Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and even last year's champion David Nalbandian, in a loaded quarterfinal draw. However, Nikolay Davydenko has two Masters Series titles to his name and we saw in April what the Russian can do when he hits a hot streak. Andy Roddick and Nadal were both swept aside in straight sets as he claimed one of the biggest titles on tour in Miami.
The Davydenko backhand was working brilliantly once more as he scored an eighth win over Tomas Berdych 6-1, 6-1. Berdych didn't serve particularly well (only 49% first serves in) and that needed to be a lot better against a returner of Davydenko's caliber, but it still takes some performance to hand out that sort of thrashing to a big hitter on a surface this fast.
Berdych only won 46% points on his first serve and just nine points on his second in the entire match, getting broken five times. Davydenko saved all five break points against him.
