  • Berdych sets up Wawrinka clash

    10/28/08 3:15 PM | David Cox
Berdych sets up Wawrinka clash Tomas Berdych set up a second round with 12th seed Stanislas Wawrinka after doing enough to see off Robby Ginepri in Paris on Monday afternoon.

Berdych dropped serve twice in the match but was able to take his chances on the return games to come through 6-4, 7-5.

However, Marat Safin's mood was bleak after his 6-0, 7-6 defeat to Juan Monaco. The Russian lost the first eight games (at one point serving four double faults in one service game) and although he finally got on the scoreboard in the second, breaking back for 2-2, he couldn't impose himself on the match and the tiebreak slipped away 7-4. “I don't know what happened,” Safin said. “Just couldn't find my rhythm and couldn't find my game.”

The Russian made the Moscow final a few weeks ago but his performance yesterday was enough to make him consider retirement. Safin is no stranger to wild press conference statements but this is a new low. Even during a bad run at the start of the year, he kept insisting retirement was not an option; he enjoyed the tour lifestyle too much. However, the grind of the season appears to have taken its toll.

“I need to sit down and relax and just enjoy my life without any tennis for a couple of months and then I will see. It's a little bit uncomfortable to be in the top 10 for many years and to then find yourself ranked 70 and 30 and 50.” Safin said. “If I feel like I want to continue to play, I will. If not, it will be over.”
