  • Nishikori, Ancic and Söderling in action on packed Thursday in Stockholm

    10/9/08 3:00 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nishikori, Ancic and Söderling in action on packed Thursday in Stockholm All of the big stars of the tournament in Stockholm take to the court in the second round.

    Kei Nishikori vs. Dominik Hrbaty

Dominik Hrbaty is having a terrible year. His ranking has fallen all the way to 396 and he has been unable to make any inroads, even at Challenger tournaments. Japan’s Kei Nishikori is a star on the rise. He was the surprise winner in the Delray Beach tournament earlier this year. He struggled a bit throughout the summer, but found his game again at the US Open, advancing all the way to the round of 16 before going out to Juan Martin Del Potro. Nishikori should breeze through easily.

    Mario Ancic vs. Steve Darcis

“Super” Mario Ancic is just coming off yet another illness after losing six months of last year to glandular fever. The Croat made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon this year before falling ill. He was forced to withdraw completely from the US Open. He lost to Ernests Gulbis, the rising Latvian star, last week in Metz. Ancic enjoys a 1-0 head-to-head with Belgium’s Steve Darcis. They played earlier this year on the grass in s’Hertogenbosch. Ancic has all the tools to beat Darcis; the bigger question that lingers is over Ancic’s health. A healthy Ancic should win in straight sets.

    Juan Monaco vs. Robin Söderling

Juan Monaco of Argentina just had a convincing straight-set win over Swede Jonas Björkman in the first round. Söderling will not be such an easy opponent for Monaco. The two men have met on three occasions. Söderling has won the last two and with relative ease. The bad news for Monaco is that their last meeting occurred on the red clay of Roland Garros, by far Monaco’s best surface. The faster indoor surface in Stockholm can only help Söderling. The Swede will also have the crowd supporting him. Söderling in straight sets.
