Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew from the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Thursday prior to his second-round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber. Del Potro will hope to be ready for Madrid next week.
Juan Martin Del Potro pulled out of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna on Thursday afternoon, citing a right toe problem. The Argentine had been scheduled to play Philipp Kohlschreiber in a second-round match.
With the Masters Series event in Madrid looming large next week, Del Potro's presence at the Vienna tournament was always in doubt, especially after he looked ill in a Sunday loss to Tomas Berdych at the Japan Open. Nonetheless, Del Potro gutted out a first-round win over little-known Austrian Martin Fischer that required two tiebreakers.
The singly victory will be enough for Del Potro to move up to the precious No. 8 spot in the race to the year-end Masters Cup in Shanghai. He temporarily replaces James Blake in that final position.
Kohlschreiber, meanwhile, gets a free pass to face No. 5 seed Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals on Friday.
