Lleyton Hewitt will test his recent hip surgery with a start at the Medibank International in Sydney next January as the former No. 1 aims to try and perform up to expectations at the Australian Open.
Hewitt, 27 and ranked 67th after an injury-plagued year, underwent hip surgery after the Beijing Games and says he is well on the road to recovery.
"It's an exciting time for me. I'm already feeling refreshed, reinvigorated and excited about the challenge ahead," he said after announcing that he would aim to win a fifth career title at Sydney, now his home event.
"My recovery is going well and I am really looking forward to the Australian summer. I've won here four times and would love to make it five. Some good hard matches in Sydney will certainly help me in my preparation for the 2009 Australian Open.
"I'm really looking forward to the Australian summer," said Hewitt. Tournament officials said they are hopeful of attracting world No. 1 Rafael Nadal into the field after the Spaniard had to retire in the first round last January.
