Bjorn Rehnquist was in action on Sunday in the last day of qualifying at the Stockholm Open. A couple of upsets also marked the day.
Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador took early control of his match against Bjorn Rehnquist. Lapentti broke Rehnquist in the first game of the match and surged to a 4-2 lead, but the Swede turned the match around, taking the next five games and securing the set at 6-4. Rehnquist broke again in the second set for 5-3, and had the opportunity to serve out the match. Lapentti broke back with ease and forced the second set to a tiebreak. Rehnquist took a 5-0 lead in the breaker, but it took until 6-5 for him to finally take the match. It was his seventh match point.
Rehnquist will play the unseeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the first round of the main draw.
In a shock, the number 1 ranked qualifier Juan Monaco of Argentina was knocked out by Frederik Nielsen of Denmark in straight sets. Also sent home was the number three ranked Flavio Cipolla of Italy. Cipolla was beaten by Germany’s Matthias Bachinger.
