Qualifying got under way at the If Stockholm Open on Saturday, with a few surprises to make things interesting.
Swedish players Bjorn Rehnquist and Michael Ryderstedt player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Michael Ryderstedt advanced in their respective matches. Rehnquist gave Finland’s Timo Nieminen a drubbing, as he advanced to the second round of qualifying with a 6-2, 6-1 scoreline. His countryman Ryderstedt had a slightly more difficult time with Great Britain’s James Ward. Ward took the Swede to a first set tiebreak, before going down 6-2 in the second set. Rehnquist and Ryderstedt play each other in the second round of qualifying.
The biggest disappointment in the opening round for the hosting country was the failure of Filip Prpic to capitalize on the three break points he had on Frederik Nielsen’s serve. The Dane held serve and went on to reel off five consecutive games to win the set 6-3. He took the second set 6-2. Also tumbling on Saturday was Tobias Blomgren. He took the middle set from Australia’s Joseph Sirianni, but Sirianni completely out-played Blomgren in the third. The final score was 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
There were a number of upsets on the first day. The number two ranked qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo was dispatched by Giovanni Lapentti from Ecuador. American Amer Delic was also sent home early by Switzerland’s George Bastl 7-5, 6-3. Delic came back from 0-3 down in the first to level the set at 3-3, but Bastl was able to break again for the set. The young American seemed fatigued, perhaps suffering jet-lag; he played in Tokyo just last week.
