Number one seed David Ferrer and fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro fought for spots in the AIG Japan Open quarterfinals on Thursday.
Argentine wonder kid Juan Martin Del Potro gave Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen and old-fashioned beat down in their third round match, winning 6-1, 6-3. Del Potro took just a shade over an hour to beat the Finn with his vicious ground strokes. The first set scoreline could have been very different, had Nieminen played the break points better. Each man had three chances to break - Del Potro converted all of his, Nieminen none. The result was that Nieminen won a single game to give the Argentine firm command of the match.
The second set was a bit more sloppy from Del Potro. Nieminen was able to break the Argentine’s serve on the only chance he was afforded in the set. In the end, it made no difference to the outcome of the match. Del Potro broke the Finn’s serve twice for another convincing victory.
Del Potro is having the best year of his career, winning four tournaments and advancing to the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time ever. He will play top seeded David Ferrer in the quarterfinals.
Ferrer lost the first set in a tricky 3rd round match against Japan's Takeo Suzuki before storming back in the second and third set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Del Potro will be a tricky opponent for Ferrer in the quarterfinals.
