Argentina on Tuesday nominated the Estadio Orfeo indoor venue in Cordoba to host the Davis Cup final. The November tie will pit the host Argentines against Spain.
The Argentine Tennis Federation, mired in a predicament over where to host the Davis Cup final, picked the Estadio Orfeo in Cordoba on Tuesday. If the ITF approves the nomination, the Estadio Orfeo will host the tie between Argentina and Spain between November 21 and 23. The second option at the moment is the Estadio Islas Malvinas
Officials "decided to favor sporting advantage,'' according to the ATT. That advantage, of course, refers to fast indoor hard courts. Argentina certainly does not want to go up against four-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal on red clay.
The issue that still remains, however, is both the Estadio Orfeo and the Estadio Islas Malvinas do not meet the 12,000-seat capacity requirement.
Argentine player David Nalbandian, for one, hopes the Cordoba site gets approved. "Cordoba has the best conditions compared with the others," he said last week. "I was born in this province so I would love to play here, but there are a lot of other factors to be considered and we are working to choose the right option."
