  • Americans have mixed results in Tokyo

    10/1/08 2:58 AM | Cheryl Murray
Americans have mixed results in Tokyo Round one wraps up in Tokyo as two Americans advance, while others fall.

American Donald Young had another disappointing first round loss in Tokyo, as he crashed out to the little-known Austrian Martin Slanar (ranked 232 in the world) with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. The mantle of the future of American tennis, which Young has long been expected to shoulder continues to elude the nineteen year old. Slanar qualified for the AIG Japan Open. He will play the number four seed Richard Gasquet in the second round.

Another American, Jesse Levine, made it through the first round. After losing the first set 6-4 to Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke, Levine ploughed through the rest of the match, losing just one game in the final two sets. The American is ranked 101 in the world. The left-hander gained some attention last year when Roger Federer invited him to come to Dubai to train. Levine takes on the struggling number one seed David Ferrer in the second round.

Also through is Dudi Sela from Israel and Wayne Odesnik, who beat countryman Kevin Kim in straight sets.
