  • Murray golfing skills now under scrutiny

    9/30/08 7:49 AM | Johan Lindahl
Murray golfing skills now under scrutiny Andy Murray may have to work harder if the Scot wants to lift his golf ranking - and his off-court status - on the ATP.

After his father, Willie, revealed that the world No. 4 may have had a chance at a career on the links instead of the courts, scrutiny has shifted momentarily to the golfing skills of the US Open finalist.

Murray has a lot to aim for as he follows in the footsteps of Tim Henman, whose prowess on the course has only improved in the year since his retirement.

The Briton, who once hit fourth on the ATP, boasts a single-digit handicap, rivaling that of former tennis mate Pete Sampras, also able to devote more time to his "other" sport.

Murray's handicap is said to be 17, which gives him room for improvement.

The best of the golfing tennis players was Australian Scott Draper, the former Australian Open mixed doubles champion who switched sporting careers to play on the Australian golf tour.

Willie Murray told local media that his youngest son "used to come golfing. He was was very good, but he got bored with it quite easily. There wasn't enough action in it for him. He preferred football and tennis."

17. 17!! Thats pretty bad. My bf who plays about 10 times a year has a handicap of 17. My dads 52 yrs old and his handicap is 5!

U know how some parents get really disillusioned about their kids talent??

yeah.

Come to think of it, he does look as though he is playing gold sometime on the court.

that should, of course, read
playing golf

Be nice ladies.

Poor popeye.

tenstar , 10/3/08 4:35 PM

No, but a handicap of 17 is pretty average. Doesn't exactly scream natural talent. I have managed a few cricket shots on the tennis courts... not golf ones tho. Thatd be particulary bad. Woah yeah got pic of Gulbis thx, its going on the desktop until Fed decides 2 play again!

No, true so I'm glad he's sticking to tennis although ed seems able see the best of both worlds when murray takes to the tennis court! Hewitt played it recreationally too and his handicap I think was about 3. Draper obviously took it more seriously. Let's hope he focuses on improving the tennis rather than the golf handicap!

Girls: Del Boy is just warming up against Gasquet in Tokyo. On behalf of the English I apologise for the crap commentator. He is so awful, I turn the volume down to minimum. One worn-out cliche after another. God knows where WH found him!

ed251137 , 10/4/08 6:32 AM

Thinking of beaming a message to RG to turn his cap the right way round if he wants to survive against Del Boy who is looking his usual dangerous self.

ed251137 , 10/4/08 6:45 AM

Go Del Poitty- Gasquet is a great example of u backwards hat issues, ed. o which btw i completely agree with, only i believe hewitt can pull it off. cos hes lleytos.

its like tigers mum saying " oh he cud of played tennis too if he really wanted to"

kaitepai , 10/4/08 6:47 AM

The commentator obviously agrees with me, he has just suggested Gasquet turns his cap round. The said commentator clearly prides himself on his mastery of other languages. He uses his best Spanish accent to say del Po-tro and changes to a French accent for Monsieur Richar Gasquay!

tenstar etc. Did you get to see any of the Roddick Tokyo SF? A series of major hissies against the umpire and racket throwing (it looked as if it had been through a crusher he threw it so hard). Watch YouTube for clips!! Quote from aforementioned commentator "Andy is walking around as if he could eat raw meat all night". I ask you?

ed251137 , 10/4/08 10:34 AM

No ed, haven't seen a thing. Been out all day looking for a new kitchen! Doesn't look like telly is showing any tennis. Sounds like you're having fun with the commentator tho!
kait et al, I'm laying off the email for the mo til sstay clears her inbox so will only email if something is personal like you said. Saw your pics, that first one is awefully scandallous! :) You're right Mirka had a nice figure, what the heck happened?
