Andy Roddick reached his fouth final of the season in Beijing on Saturday, beating German Bjorn Phau in three sets.
The match started off in expected fashion. Roddick was throwing down bombs and running away with the first set. Roddick lost just one point on his serve in the entire set and broke Phau twice.
The second set was more competitive. Despite Phau serving at only 42%, he was still able to hold six times and not face a break point. The second set saw nice aggressive play from both men as a tiebreak was imminent. Roddick's baseline game was solid throughout, but his net game still leaves much to be desired. At 4-all in the tiebreak, Roddick hit quite the lame mid-court volley and ended up losing the point. Not only did he not close the net fast enough, but his approach shot was terrible. Phau took the second 7-6(4).
At 1-all in the third set, the match turned once again. After saving two break points and several game points to hold, Phau eventually was broken. Roddick won the next four games and took the match as Phau imploded in the third.
Roddick will contest his fourth final of the season against Dudi Sela, who is in the first final of his career.
