  • Federer set for Davis Cup showdown with United States

     - The 2009 Davis Cup draw ceremony was held on Tuesday and it produced a marquee first-round matchup between the United States and Switzerland.

Roger Federer and his Swiss Davis Cup team will travel to the United States in early March of next year to contest a blockbuster opening round in the 2009 Davis Cup World Group.

Federer has insisted he will participate next year, and the United States setting should be conducive to those plans. The Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells begins the week immediately following Davis Cup first-round action, so Federer would already be close by as opposed to being forced to make a quick trek halfway around the world.

Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, with whom the World No. 2 partnered to win doubles gold in Beijing, would be a formidable foe for the United States, which won the title in 2007 but lost in the 2008 semifinals last weekend against the host Spaniards.

The winner of U.S.A-Switzerland tie will meet either Croatia or Chile in the quarterfinals.

Argentina, which will host this year's title match, will be heavily favored against the Netherlands in round one, while the other finalist in 2008, Spain, opens with Serbia. That sets the stage for a potential clash between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
