  • Nadal overcomes Querrey; Spain 1-0 USA

    9/20/08 12:00 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - In a spirited effort, Sam Querrey was able to take a set on clay in Spain from the World No. 1 Rafael Nadal before the Spaniard regained himself to take the next three sets.

Querrey came out throwing down bombs and finished with 17 aces in total. Nadal looked rusty and tired; his forehands and movement were sub-par on the day. Playing in Madrid as opposed to Barcelona certainly helped the American as the balls were simply flying. After winning the first set, Querrey found himself up a break in the second before Nadal buckled down and got his act together.

After starting extremely slow, Nadal picked it up in the second, breaking Querrey twice and taking it 6-4. He broke early in the third as well, as his play got better as the match wore on. The fourth set was standard, as Nadal pressed but could not break and Querrey had one break chance that he failed to convert. Nadal eventually took the fourth set and the match to give the Spaniards a 1-0 lead.

Querrey had a nice showing for himself in this match as nerves didn't really seem to be much of a factor. Querrey is on the way up and will be a valuable Davis Cup commodity in the future.
