  • Federer uses his influence to replace entire line-calling team

    9/20/08 10:53 AM | Johan Lindahl
     - Little could spoil Roger Federer's winning Davis Cup return to Switzerland as the five-time US Open champion, helped by teammate Stan Wawrinka, put the hosts in 2-0 command over Belgium in Lausanne.

But the world No. 2 did have to clear away a minor annoyance as he managed to get an entire team of linesmen replaced during his victorious opening singles rubber.

It was a series of line calls gone wrong which got the Swiss' temper up. The usually amicable Federer boiled over in his own quiet way after a disputed call gave opponent Kristof Vliegen an early break in the second set.

After a quiet word with the chair, the entire team of nine officials was substituted at the next changeover with Federer trailing 4-1 before his eventual winning recovery.

"I just asked him to change them, that's all I did," Federer said. "Maybe I could have over-reacted but I was so irritated by the call because for me it was such an obvious call."

Even No. 95 Vliegen agreed. "If Roger is complaining, that's a really good sign to me that I was not the only one concerned with the calls," said the Belgian.

Federer is playing this weekend in his native land for the first time this season.

'He managed to get an entire team of linesmen', God please forgive him, he doesn't know what he's doing, who is he to replace all the team, for all of you, especially for Janhavi, that's the proof, how this man express his arrogance and bad attitude from time to time, what a manners...

gordana , 9/22/08 9:39 AM

lolllllllllllllllll gordana..guess you don't know that players are allowed to do that..vliegen got a break beacuse of that call.....read the article..even vligien had problems with the line calls...lolzzz pure example of ignorance....anyway..Federer dosent have anything to prove to you..he has millions and millions of fans(there'll be about a million in my own country inspite of tennis not being that big) across the globe rooting for him and who adore him.......lollll... some.people scrutinize every word of his coz of his position without even understanding the context properly..geez....and he's not perfect..he's true to himself and others..dosent try to be extraaaaaa humble..that makes him popular...a handful of people who've joined hands on this site to talk crap about him make no difference..i was trying to to go against those who are being rather extreme about players here..but no point..cant wake up those who choose to remain asleep..all these players are great guys so they are the top guys..its as simple as that...

janhavi , 9/22/08 12:03 PM

Hi Janhavi, I've been waiting for you, must admit, missed you a lot, by the way, where do you come from, I suppose from India, am I wright...

gordana , 9/22/08 12:10 PM

yes..I am..you got a problem with that?

janhavi , 9/22/08 12:24 PM

i suppose my nationality has nothing to with the topic of discussion..the point is -its normal for players to have problems with the line calls.

janhavi , 9/22/08 12:29 PM

i spoke of my country to make a general statement..thats it..

janhavi , 9/22/08 12:33 PM

Ha, ha, ha, you're great, why should I have a problem with that, I used to work with Indians, that's why, I knew it, don't be angry, we're just commenting, nothing else, but have to admit, Serbia don't have so many people like India, but Novak has such a support from his nation, it's worthy as he has millions fans... Finally, you must be a big fan of Tiger Wood, golf is most popular in your country, it's good you don't have top seeded tennis player, otherwise, you'd 'kill me', joke of course...

gordana , 9/22/08 12:42 PM

know Novak gets a lot of support from his nation..and thats good..infact great..am a fan of Woods but its cricket thats most popular..geez..im posting comments that are totally irrelevant to the topic....like the joke though...tennis is my persomal fav.

janhavi , 9/22/08 1:01 PM

Tells people they are "entitled to their opinion" but whoever has a different opinion are asleep. Whoever disagrees with you or do not blindly worship Federer are wrong. Everything you write is gospel truth and you are right about everything and perfect. You are a blind Federer worshipper who do not appreciate his game. I notice you don't talk about his game and tennis itself. You just go on and on about how wonderful he is and viciously defend him against the sleepers and always has to have the last say. I bet some Federer fans are cringing at your ridiculous behaviour.

jean , 9/22/08 1:12 PM

nope..jean..got no problems with people not liking federer..just think that players deserve respect..be it anyone..had it been incase of nadal i'd have reacted the same way...no Federer fan will cringe ..i'm right and they will know that..anyone who has watched federer for a long time and is a fan of his will agree with me...i already said he isnt perfect..that dosent mean he's arrogant...i never go on about federer ..you make me by talking crap...there's difference between expressing opinions and throwing dirt on players' professional grace..be it anyone...im not a blind wirshipper of any player..but i love tennis and after so long we've got four great players on top..instead of enjoying that we have people like you removing small faults of other players and glorifying their fav players.

janhavi , 9/22/08 1:47 PM

rest your case jean..we both know that the top 4 are great players and are good humans..they dont have to be perfect..they have to be themselves..coz thats great for the sport

janhavi , 9/22/08 1:53 PM

Federer MUST do everything desperate to PROVE that he's STILL #1!
He must not lose to a player like Vliegen in a stage like the Davis Cup in in his own country. That would have been a huge block of salt in his STILL bleeding wound!

agf25agf , 9/22/08 2:23 PM

agf25agf: couldn't agree more!
The top 4 are good humans!?!?!?! Does Tennistalk.com give out awards? This line deserves the prize of the century!

remi , 9/23/08 8:19 AM

geez...why are they not good as humans?if you think so..cant help....as far as proving himself goes..Federer has proved his worth on numerous occasions...he keeps doing so....

janhavi , 9/23/08 9:18 AM

i completely accord with you janhavi...u r very apt in ur posts...

ravikiran , 10/1/08 7:15 PM

LOL. Federer is so pro that he is able to replace the entire line-calling team.

phanatic123 , 10/2/08 11:20 AM

his opponent too was complaining..

janhavi , 10/2/08 1:49 PM

please stop in quest for mere faults...I know u people hav got nothing to talk about federers records and attitude ..tats y u people starting poking on petty things....

no other player in tennis has got such a cool attitude...he never shouts if he wins a point n never when he looses a point ..players like nadal..hewitt does n do that....and we have even seen roddick ..safin smashing their rackets to ground...have u ever seen such instances wid fedex....

he has got a very cool n nice attitude even after having such an incredible records by his side....

so what i want to say is stop poking on petty thing about fedex...tat wud b great n fine...

ravikiran , 10/4/08 7:27 AM

ravikiran, you're such intelligent guy, what a orthography, even when I used to live and work with Americans, I never heard such a language, anyway, it seems to me, you're great supporter to Federer, I do respect that, but, as I already said so many times, he was the best, not anymore, regarding his attitude, the only thing I could say is, he's puffed up, arrogant, he's acting all the time, has such pose, nobody can approach him, from his body language you can find out, he could blow up from his thought, he's tennis master-piece. I'm sorry, but he isn't, from this article, you can see, I was right...

gordana , 10/4/08 9:44 AM

That's crap, he has shouted when he wins points, watch and listen properly! He's not teh coolest on court, the Swedes are. At least Nadal and Hewitt never give excuses when they lose. Federer has REPEATEDLY! When he was junior, he thrashed his racket round, now he releases anger by giving excuses. Facts, not pettiness. You are a Rog Fan so don't like to read these things. Too bad! If he would lose like a gentleman, we will stop saying these things. Have you seen ANYONE deny his tennis abilities? ANYONE critize his game? No!!! Just his attitude because fans know when they see a great player but also when they see a great loser.

homos , 10/4/08 11:33 AM

i agree with ravikiran..but i also agree with homos on the point tht federer was a complete hot-head as a youngster..and tht nadal is definitely much more sorted out...i however dont feel he gives excuses..he himself has admitted he was really bad as a youngster as he would easily go on some emotional roller- coaster for small things..but about giving excuses..i guess tht is again-individual opinion..i personally dont feel he's a bad loser...besides his path.. has been tougher...nadal never had to stay away from home..he never had to get homesick and all that..its one thing when you get emotional and moral support and another thing when you dont get enough..nadal was lucky his uncle himself was a tennis player..but i agree..federer gets a bit sulky..i just feel for tht we shouldnt label him as arrogant..his good qualities are definitely more in number..besides people in the tennis world have only nice things to say about him and they know better than we do...but ravikiran ..there are millions of fans around the world who adore Federer..i daresay with so much pressure that he is constantly subjected to..he has still managed to remain extraordinarily graceful ..

janhavi , 10/4/08 7:47 PM

fedex thrashed his racket when he was a junior n tat is d first n last time...u got that....and plz stop commenting abt fedex attitude...hez very cool n recently in us open he startd shouting tat too after he win a match...he never shoutd in d middle of matches when he gains a point or game.....and don say fedex is arrogant...stop spreading rumours plz discuss abt facts....

i pity u people .....

ravikiran , 10/4/08 7:50 PM

and i have seen videos of him playing football with small children in southafrica...dis is d answer for no body can approach him...

wat evr u people say he is d coolest on d court.....and u people dont know his character properly..so juz shut up n stop poking on trivial things...

ravikiran , 10/4/08 8:04 PM

What a rubbish assessment. I feel sorry for you. Pull your head out kid.

remi , 10/5/08 3:24 AM

I guess u don have answers for my questions......if u feel itz a rubbish assessment...no one can help u..i pity u....stop ur crap comments on fedex.....he is genius.....master of tennis...wat ever u people say....he is a legend of all time...

ravikiran , 10/5/08 7:54 AM

Ha, ha, ha ravikiran, you made my day, I can't stop laughing, what a story, Federer should get in touch with you, you could be his PR manager for India, ha, ha, ha, I wanted to make an comment, but honestly, I'm speechless, remi gave a proper comment instead of me...

gordana , 10/6/08 9:04 AM

itz not a story..itz a fact n u nadal fans juz get lost ..u r damn irritating..u wont be accepting good of fedex...v know tat....don be so jealous of fedex....

ravikiran , 10/6/08 5:15 PM

ravikiran, first of all, I'm Novak fan, secondly, Nadal is the best and that's the fact, thirdly, Novak will be at the second position very soon, it's matter of time, finally, you're irritating all the tennis fans with your blindness regarding Mr. Arrogance, we don't have any single reason to be jealous on him, his time already gone, cheers...

gordana , 10/7/08 8:44 AM

am not a blind supporter of fedex..am talkin facts..its upto u whether u accept them or not...

Federer is ranked 9th in the 25 most powerful global sports figures...the link:
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/08/10/1002_power100_global/9. htm

Federer @ number 9 or is it number 3???

Its about the sporting figures...there are 6 executives ahead of Federer in that list..
Only David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo rank above, among the sports personalities..
That would make Federer ranked 3rd in that list..

The exectutives are the FIFA chief, Olympic Committee Prez,Formula 1 chief, owner of football (soccer) clubs Chelsea n Real Madrid and the likes...and then there is Platini, a football superstar of the yesteryears, but he makes it ahead of Federer in his capacity as an executive of european football association..

To sum it up -- number 3 isn't that far behind afta' all!!!

ravikiran , 10/7/08 10:04 AM

LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL.....LOL... ..LOL.....LOL.....

ur novak going to dominate fedex n get into second rank......joke of dis century....

ravikiran , 10/7/08 10:08 AM

ravikiran, you've lost your control, in my opinion, you belong to your national sport, cricket, stay with it, better for you, can make an comment when you get at least one tennis player at the top of tennis sky, till then, be quit, cause Serbia has three tennis players at the top, do you hear me threeeeeeeeeeee, Novak the greatest, then Jelena Jankovic, (position number 1 WTA, Ana Ivanovic, number 4 ( for your information, she was number 1 recently, so two of them changing the position 1 from time to time), finally, all your story is useless, cause I've presented facts to you, Mr. Arrogance belong to the past, LOL, LOL, LOL, whatever it means in your language, cause it's not an English word as far as I know, I used to have English teachers, so, my dear, situation is like this, what we could do, we as a country, have quantity as well as quality, cheers from Novak and me...

gordana , 10/7/08 10:53 AM

Oh my goodness people can you ever fight hard over nothing. First on the topic of linesman I believe if they are not doing their job properly they should be replaced. After all they are there for the players and not vice versa. On the topic of Federer well like him or not his achievements are documented in the record books of this great sport and there are a very few left to break and the chances are that he still may . These are the facts regardless of how you fill about the man. However when I think of him now I believe that one detail will remain in my memory forever and that is at this years French Open trophy presentation. He was so badly beaten by Rafa Nadal in that match and after what must have been a terrible moment for him he still remembered to put a gentle hand on the head of the little girl who escorted him to receive his runner up trophy. I saw it as something amazing that a person can put his own fillings aside and give a little child a wonderful memory to cherish. Also it shoved this year which was very difficult for him in many ways how he managed to get even more support from people because he appeared more human and shoved that he hurts like the rest of us. Again I am not a fan of any player in particular but these are the facts and I am the fan of this sport and Federer has been and still is good for it and, he loves it for this reason he has my support. Keep in mind that he could have given in after people said that he will never win another major and that he is done as a player but he did not because he know something others did not and that is that he has his goals and he is playing because he wants to not because he has anything left to prove. So like him or not looks like he is still around for a while or at least until he breaks that holly record of most Grand Slam titles von or until he is too old to play any more. After all Pete Sampras had the same goal and he retired right after he reached it, who knows maybe Federer retires next year after all and saves you all from having to fight any more.

brenda , 10/7/08 11:31 AM

My dear Gordana you speak as if you are Novak?s public relations officer. For this reason I am curries to know if you ever actually met a man in person and if you have did you ask his permeation to speak in his name to the world. From what I have seen from Novak he does not need your help in speaking out he does plenty of that on his own. So until you are placed on his payroll for public relations services please refrain from speaking in his name it sounds very silly. On the other hand if you have credentials and are authorized for this line of work than you may wont to talk to the media as Novak does need to do some damage control at the moment and you are wasting your precious time on this site.

brenda , 10/7/08 11:56 AM

brenda, what a post, for your information, I might be his PR manager not officer, but he's doing his PR excellently so far, if he'd need me I'll be more than happy to do that, as far as I'm concerned, I won't let anybody insulting our Novak, however, just to mention, you're right, my time is precious and valuable, but always have spare time to support him, not only on this site, but on the many others, I'm capable to do that, you know I'm multiple talented person, so don't worry...

gordana , 10/7/08 2:07 PM

My dear Gordana I deliberately used the word ?officer? because I do not believe that anyone else can manage anything beside his parents as they seam to manage everything in his life to the smallest detail even who he should date. But you sound like someone who aims very high so you may want to try for a management position but let me tell you it would be a tough position to get and even tougher one to do. So good luck!

brenda , 10/7/08 4:18 PM

Gordana juz bug off..u have no right to speak tat way... every one has d right to be a fan of his choice,...wat if i belong to india ????is there any rule tat i shud watch only cricket n shud b a fan of only cricket players.....how cud u speak in such an idiotic way...u r a damn fool..who d hell r u to tell me ???????its my wish ..i love tennis n iam a fan of fedex..u just shut up....and wat if if they r three players from serbia....just get lost..even v do have players like peas n bhupathi from india for tennis......n a small question ...are they any cricket players from ur country??????LOL...LOL...LOL....

2.so never make such*** stupid comparisons...

ravikiran , 10/7/08 6:45 PM

ravikiran..one suggestion..check what you maybe typing..even a word like stupid does qualify for an insult here and i dont think these words are permitted here..just a word of caution...i made this mistake once by calling some people writing nonsensical stuff 'stupid haters' ofcourse i didnt mean to target anyone in particularjust general haters i came across..but i soon found out tht it is not permitted..and i agree with that..thts only fair and correct.

janhavi , 10/7/08 7:04 PM

yeah janhavi but did u see how tat gordana posted........how can she tell me to stop posting regarding tennis..are there any rules n stuff tat i got to watch only cricket n not tennis...i was damn irritated when i saw such a post ..tats y i got fired up...sorry for using such insulting language in a blog like this..but i was unable to control my anger ..when i saw tat post....

ravikiran, congratulations, what a language, that's the picture of you, it would be useless to put any comment, you've already presented yourself with such a bad attitude, rude language, no way to justify your behaviour, even janhavi with whom I've changed many posts, haven's said such a thing never, cause he understood my points, but do you know what, it's forgiven to you, cause you don't know what you're talking about, I find out you've been irritating by my comments, but dear, that's the fact, I couldn't imagine that someone using such a bad words just because he's fan of some tennis player, don't you think, I could reply on the same way, even worst, but I don't want, cause I behave myself, I'm very well educated person and simply that's not my way, I'll stay like this, I do know too many folks over here will support me, finally, wish you all the best with yourself, cause it's not easy to you, you have serious problem, time will show everything, even if I'm wrong, Novak will stay in my heart forever...

ravikiran , 10/8/08 6:25 PM

Gordana,

You are not the only Serbian to check this site and post comments!!!!! Suprised!!!! Please think twice before you write your comments, because the entire world may think that we are all "weirdos". Novak is a great tennis player. He does not need somebody like you to defend him, because quite frankly, you are not qualified to do so! On the other hand, let's leave Novak alone. His game will speak louder than your words.

arailic , 10/9/08 2:44 AM

Thats well said arailic !!! Thank u so much for ur post....

ravikiran , 10/9/08 4:54 AM

arailic, I don't think you're Serbian at all, never mind, no comment on your post at all, it's worthless...

gordana , 10/9/08 8:35 AM

Gordana,
