This weekend's Davis Cup semi-final between Spain and the US is not the first time that tennis gladiators have met inside a bullring.
The Las Ventas venue for the heated Madrid tie is sure to be the scene for heroics on the clay as the home side of Rafael Nadal aims for a second final in five years against a patched-together US team.
The Spanish world No. 1 opens against Davis Cup rookie Sam Querrey, who replaces the unmotivated James Blake, who asked not to be included on the team headed by Andy Roddick. Also out for the US: Bob Bryan with a right shoulder injury. His place is taken on court alongside his twin brother by Mardy Fish.
The clash in front of around 21,000 fans follows another tennis-in-the-ring effort a decade ago when the Mallorca Open was held in a similar venue.
A Spanish Davis Cup tie was also played in a Mallorcan bullring against the Netherlands in 2004, the year Spain went onto win the trophy over the US in the Seville final.

Did you know that... James Blake suffered from severe scoliosis as a teenager. He had to wear a back brace for 18 hours of the day because of it.
