Sam Querrey insists that he's got the game for clay after his late substitution into a first-time spot on the US Davis Cup team which faces a huge ask with a weekend semi-final tie in Madrid against Spain.
"My game feels good on clay, I'm a tall guy," said the rangy Californian who reached the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals last spring in a total surprise. "When the ball gets up, it's getting up into my shoulders, in my strike zone. I don't mind that. I still feel like I can get my serve through the court."
Querrey will need to be on his game from Friday when the underdog Americans take on Spain and Rafael Nadal, playing in front of more than 20,000 on a tennis court laid down inside a Madrid bullring.
The setting will be perfect for Nadal, the raging bull of the courts with French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic titles during this runaway season of success.
Querrey is expected to back up Andy Roddick in singles after James Blake withdrew citing fatigue. Blake is also far from comfortable on the surface, winning a single round in Paris at the Grand Slam.
Querrey is eager to show what he can do under pressure. "I'm not a great slider or anything on clay, but I definitely feel comfortable moving on it."
