Already facing a near impossible task going up against Spain on red clay, things just got a whole lot tougher for the United States Davis Cup team.
The Bryan Brothers, who led the U.S.A. to the 2007 Davis Cup title and recently captured the U.S. Open doubles championship, won't be pairing up after all for this weekend's semifinal tie against the host Spaniards.
Mike Bryan will be without brother Bob, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury.
“I aggravated it pretty bad at the Open and only made things worse,” Bob said. “I knew if I wanted a chance to play the rest of this year, I had to shut it down now. I can't even hit any balls.”
“He's been taking anti-inflammatories and getting a lot of treatment on it. I think it's fairly serious,” Mike added.
Mardy Fish, who reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open before falling to Rafael Nadal in four sets, will play doubles with Mike.
