Gilles Simon looked to book his second consecutive trip to the semifinals of the BCR Open Romania. He took on fellow Frenchman Florent Serra in the quarters. Acasuso booked his own spot in the final four with a straight set win as well.
Neither Simon nor Serra served well in their quarterfinal match, though Simon won easily 6-2, 6-3. Each of their first serve percentages were under fifty percent and the first set alone featured six breaks of serve. Serra failed to hold serve at all in the opening set - the two games that he won were breaks of Simon’s serve.
The quality of play improved somewhat in the second set. Simon was only broken once while Serra lost serve three times. Simon came into the match with excellent summer results. He won the title in Indianapolis where he beat Dmitry Tursunov in the final. His big win of the summer came over Roger Federer in the second round of Toronto. He eventually reached the semifinals there.
Jose Acasuso also advanced to the semifinals on Friday. He defeated the Spaniard Ivan Navarro 6-4, 6-4. Acasuso played a crisp match. He faced just two break points and saved both. Navarro was only broken once in each set, but that was enough for the Argentine to advance comfortably. Acasuso and Simon will play in Saturday’s semifinal.
