  • Federer says New York title saved his season

    9/10/08 8:18 AM | Johan Lindahl
     - Roger Federer admits he went a long way towards saving his season with a last-gasp Grand Slam title for 2008 at the US Open.

“I would have been disappointed, losing and having three finals and one semis at Slams. You feel like you've missed an entire year, being so close but yet so far”, said the Swiss who tasted major disappointment with losses in the French Open and Wimbledon finals to Rafael Nadal.

Federer is planning a full schedule throughout the autumn - including the Stockholm Open in October - and is aiming at trying to come level alongside Pete Sampras on 14 career Grand Slam trophys by winning a fourth Australian Open next January in Melbourne.

The Swiss knows he has set his personal performance bar achingly high over his past four years of domination. “Semis and finals don't help me a whole lot anymore in my career,” he confessed. “It's all about the wins”.

“That's why this is huge”, he said of his New York finals victory over Andy Murray in straight sets. “This is massive, really”.

“I'm very, very happy about this Grand Slam obviously. It's a different type of flavor, this one, to me, no doubt”.
