  • Djokovic fights off Cilic and Robredo downs Tsonga

    9/1/08 7:14 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - A nearly four-hour battle saw Novak Djokovic taking down Marin Cilic while Robredo outsmarted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Ending at about 1 AM, world #3 Novak Djokovic took his next stride into the second week of this US Open by beating rising youngster Marin Cilic. Cilic is seeded for the first time in a Slam and has a nice game to watch. He showed everyone tonight why he is being talked about as a possible top ten player in the next year or two, but not quite now.

Cilic certainly has the game and the 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(0) scoreline reflected that. It was in certain situations that Djokovic was simply more solid and more mentally strong than Cilic. Throwing down an ace to save a set point for example. Cilic, in time, will be in the top ten barring injury.

Speaking of injury, if Tsonga could stay healthy long enough he too could be a top ten guy. However, Tsonga has a high risk and varied game that can cool off from time to time. And playing a smart opponent like Robredo can culminate these factors into a loss. Tsonga hit 63 errors and was clearly off. He looks a bit chubby and out of match practice, both completely understandable due to his absence from the tour.

Robredo simply outsmarted Tsonga and forced him to have to make insane shots just to win a point. Tommy may not have the best skill set for the game but he is extremely intelligent on court. He will play Djokovic in the 4th round.

The way those two guys were hitting was beyond amazing. I'm surprised the balls didnt just implode.

tenstar and sstay: Novak's outfit also defied description it was so horrible!

ed, what was it? I had a look on the uso website, was it a black top with a green right shoulder patch or something else? If that was it, it didn't look too bad tho i could only see the top bit.
sstay: ao tickets selling next month. you still thinking of volying? I'm gonna be busy but I might just sneak east anyway. Will probably catch hopman cup here too - may as well since sa has done the dirty on me (and you) :)

tenstar , 9/1/08 3:11 PM

tenstar: it is the one shown on the USO site but it was a poisonous shade of green with a peculiar motif and black in a shiny, slimy fabric. It made Nole look most sinister and as if he were about to be sea-sick. Most unflattering.

Amazing match. Too bad Cilic couldn't pull it off in the end.

RafaNadalGirl20 , 9/1/08 8:21 PM

It's a sickly shade of moss/lime green. what made it worse is the slinky feel of the fabric and the nauseating shade is repeated in the shorts! made me think of reptiles. positively gross. i thought the baby blue-orange number he wore for Olym was bad enough.he needs styling help, big time.
Tenstar, thanks for letting me know about AO tickets. Volunteering still an option but haven't had time to check it out. Very sad about Adel losing hardcourts tournament. makes me more determined to make AO.

sstay , 9/2/08 2:49 AM

I actually liked Djok's shirt- I mean I'd cry of Rog wore it but it suits him. However he has the weird habit of matching the shorts.... the shorts were beyond bad. God Stan isn't gonna beat Murray is he... I'm gonna cry

kaitepai , 9/2/08 3:02 AM

ok sstay, ed: I see what you mean. Pity. Still.. it gives us something to whinge about! The only other distasteful attire I recall vividly is Nalbo's grey top and shorts, think it was the Wimb yr he played Hewitt in finals. That def didn't do him any justice.
RNG20: that was a hard one. I secretly wanted Cilic to win but djok kinda serves it too. I Hope Cilic remains consistent and injury-free and makes an impact from now.

tenstar , 9/2/08 3:46 AM

sstay: me too, determined to make it for same reasons. I'll very likely go. Will have to get them on day 1 of sales because public get the less ideal sections unless you can wangle it another way, which I'm looking into. If you find the voly website, can I have it? Hopman cup's not bad, tho venue sucks but it's only a camel ride up the rd for me. I'd suggest you come but the problem with these warm up tournaments is that any slight injury and the players will pull out because the AO is the aim. Happened with Jankovic last time but her and djok played the deciding final against serena and fish and it was good.

tenstar , 9/2/08 4:21 AM

katiepal: you can't be serious! You liked that shirt?

ed251137 , 9/2/08 4:55 AM

Talking of clothes, the Andy team have finally registered something had to be done - or the people at Fred Perry have been reading our comments. This is the smartest I have ever seen him look. Now let's see if he can be persuaded to have a decent hair-cut.

It may be a coincidence, but with the new smart look, came some of the smartest tennis he has played in a long time. He has peaked at just the right moment and might just manage to topple Del Boy.

ed251137 , 9/2/08 5:12 AM

tenstar, that you can remember what Nalby wore 6 years ago impresses me. I can't even remember what I wore last week! I just made a few phone calls re volunteering. all positions taken up. applications closed in May! bummer! Do you know which is the best website for tickets? there are so many. I found this one.

I watch Hopman cup on TV every year but it's not looking promising for the OZ team.
Ed, I'm cheering for Andy to beat Del boy. but del is looking very strong, I must say.

sstay , 9/2/08 5:25 AM

ha ha sstay, the only reason i remember it is because the commentators made an aweful fuss about it and even interviewed him about it post match, pointing out that he perspired so much into it that it 'didn't look comfy' or something. Brainwashed, I came to the same conclusioned! :) No hope for ausies for a while at HC but that's not going to stop me watching great tennis, or any tennis. AO here I come. I go to office to get my tickets, don't trust website anymore. Someone bought Wimb tickets this year I think, paid both arms, legs, head, torso for it and discovered it wasn't legit. Ooofff big ouch!
It's a "go popeye" for me too!

tenstar , 9/2/08 5:40 AM

Nalby sweats A LOT. remember shanghai masters cup 2 years ago, he changed into a red Tshirt and ended up beating Roger (red good luck colour for us chinese). he was at a fishing trip when they called him in bcuz someone pulled out at the last mo.

sstay , 9/2/08 6:12 AM

Ed- yeah I liked the shirt. It woulda looked better with a collar, but it was cool. Like I said, Rog wouldn't suit it but Novak does.

But I mean I hated the shorts, killed the whole nice top thing.

Nice 2 see Djok has got a hair cut- he could still take anotehr inch off tho.

I don't believe Murray looked good. I just can't believe it - sorry - he couldnt look good if Karl Lagerfield dressed him.

kaitepai , 9/2/08 6:58 AM

what a bunch of mediocre loosers you are, spending days on the forum, discussing outfits. i tought tennis skills is all that matters; get a life, not a superficial one. ah, western culture, there is no hope for you.

posmatrac , 9/2/08 7:05 AM

Postmatrac.... get an english lesson.

kaitepai , 9/2/08 7:20 AM

postmatrac, you don't have to join in if you don't want to. we are having a ball and that's all that matters. Tennis Talk, remember? encompassing all aspects of tennis. now about Popeye's hair...

sstay , 9/2/08 7:28 AM

Well girls, it was only a matter of time. I knew we would get up the nose of somebody sooner or later!! Do you think we should suggest Andy gets highlights and nail extensions? When you look at Mummy she is well groomed - can't think why she lets her favourite son look such a mess. But you have to admit he played exceptionally well last night.

ed251137 , 9/2/08 8:20 AM

small steps. just shape the side burns first, then think about highlights and hair extensions next, and finally, file down the canines

sstay , 9/2/08 8:45 AM

Oh dear. I cant stop giggling. Talking of canines, what is it with Querry's teeth. They look like badly fitting English NH dentures. I hope his parents didn't fork out thousands of dollars to get them fixed. If so. Big mistake.

Re: Popeye. I bet Gillette will never ask him to endorse their products. Sorry kaitepal. We know you secretly lust after him.

ed251137 , 9/2/08 9:19 AM

haha who the hell is popeye??? Murray... oh jesus no. Highlights for Murray- YES PLEASE make him look ever more ridiculous than he is!! Holy shit that would make my week if he went out there with blonde and red highlights and a muscle shirt. Seriously, what is with him pumping those gleaming white scrawny arms!! Makes me feel sick!!!

I actually secretly lust after Gulbis.... its really really weird but I have a huge thing for him. I mean Blakes perfect, Roger is... Mirka's, but Gulbis.... mmmm I dunno!!! Just find him dead sexy. Even tho he looks like Napoleon Dynamite.

kaitepai , 9/2/08 9:32 AM

I think I must be a bit thick. Unless posmatrac is a Buddhist monk or from another planet, I don't get the reference to western culture.

Can't he/she see our grooming suggestions are meant to be helpful - bearing in mind the squillions of dollars to be made from sponsorship and endorsements. sstay: definitely not hair extensions. He doesn't have the bone structure to carry off dreadlocks.

ed251137 , 9/2/08 10:31 AM

kaitepal: well, well, well. It's Gulbis is it? I would have thought he was too much of a nice boy next door type to arouse lascivious thoughts. Hey, do any of you know anyone who could digitally enhance some film footage - we could then post it on YouTube showing how AM would look after our make-over.
