Master coach Brad Gilbert has revealed one of his few public failure, opening up for publication in London's Guradian on his brief run as mentor to Britain's headstrong Andy Murray.
The American's lucrative arrangement with the Lawn Tennis Association ended late last year after Murray said he didn't need him around, preferring to form his own rotating “Team Murray”.
With Gilbert's estimated $1.5 million annual wage paid by the LTA, the gig was one of the best of the skipper's career after coaching success with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.
But Scot Murray proved to be more than a handful for his fast-talking, sports-mad Californian coach. “Andy has to be the only Scottish guy ever who doesn't drink”, said Gilbert. “His idea of a great time is studying his opponent's play on DVDs. And then he plays video games seven hours a day”.
Gilbert said that he remains unworried after being told Murray wanted to change direction and carry on without him. “Look around and you'll see how many coaches get fired. We (he and Murray) still speak”.
“He's now doing a lot of things I was asking him to do, like being much more aggressive and stop hitting so many damn drop shots. If he plays more like that then great things are going to happen to him because he has great talent”.
