  • Djokovic and Tsonga advance while Safin bombs out

    8/30/08 9:05 AM | Jonathan Morgan
Djokovic and Tsonga advance while Safin bombs out Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both got past their second round tests, but Marat Safin suffered another meltdown against Robredo.

Novak Djokovic def. Robert Kendrick 7-6(8), 6-4, 6-4

Kendrick held his own against Djokvic for much of the match, especially the first set where he had a few set points in the long tiebreak. Djokovic played solid but unspectacular, just enough to get the job done. No double faults and only 13 errors. Kendrick perhaps suffered from the opposite. He was swinging too aggressively, hitting 7 double faults. Mostly from trying to blast a second serve. The ankle that Novak had to take a timeout for in his previous match looked to be non-existant. He takes on Marin Cilic in a Serb-Croat battle in the 3rd round.

Djokovic says ther was no need to tape his problem ankle for his 2nd round match.

Djokovic says getting through a tough first set against Robert Kendrick helped his game.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Carlos Moya 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

A stellar match from both men, a treat for the crowd. Tsonga looked as if he began to play better and better as the match wore on. The footwork looked better, the serve popped bigger and he looked more imposing as the match continued. Moya played great too, but Tsonga is looking more and more like he did in January. This is his first tournament in months and he is trying to get his rhythm back. He will do battle with Tommy Robredo in the next round.

    Tommy Robredo def. Marat Safin 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-0

A microchasm of Safin's career in this match. After taking the first set and having plenty of chances to take the second, he lost it. In the 3rd, Robredo served at 4 all, break point down. Safin had an open court to put the ball away and ended up hitting it right back at Robredo who went on to win the point. Robredo held and broke Safin to take the set. The Russian got steamed and basically gave up the 4th set, letting Robredo bagel him. Robredo and Tsonga will play in the next match.
