David Ferrer, Juan Martin Del Potro and Stanislas Wawrinka looked for second round wins on Thursday.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Thomaz Bellucci 4-6,6-1,7-5,6-3
Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro continued his winning streak on Thursday, beating the Brazilian Bellucci in four sets. Del Potro has won the last four tournaments he has played and comes into the US Open with excellent hard court form. Bellucci is ranked 86 in the world, compared to Del Potro’s 17. He gave the Argentine a tougher test than expected, but in the end Del Potro found a way to win just as he did against Guillermo Canas in round one.
David Ferrer def Andreas Beck 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(5)
Spaniard David Ferrer, the number four ranked player in the world and 2007 US Open semifinalist was placed on court 7 to slug it out with Andreas Beck of Germany. The court is so remote that it did not provide television coverage. Ferrer had a difficult time with the 122 ranked Beck, further punctuating the struggles the Spaniard has had on hard courts this season. Ferrer will take on up-and-comer Kei Nishikori in the third round.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-2
In a tougher than expected test, the number ten seed Stanislas Wawrinka squeezed past American Wayne Odesnik. Odesnik is ranked 114 in the world, but he is a proficient hard court player. Wawrinka faltered a bit in the match and Odesnik helped his own defeat along, in particular with a double fault on set point in the second set. After he wasted his opportunities, the rest of the match was all Wawrinka. The Swiss man will take on Flavio Cipolla of Italy in the third round.
