A on-court spat over an alleged foot fault in the heat of US Open battle has cost volatile Marat Safin a $2,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Russian copped the minor financial sanction during his first-round win over American Vince Spadea at the U.S. Open, the International Tennis Federation said on Thursday.
Safin went momentarily ballistic with chair umpire Carlos Bernades after being controversially foot-faulted on a second serve late in the fourth set.
The Russian who won the Open in 2000 eventually took five sets to oust American Vince Spadea. Safin was fined for swearing at the Brazilian and refusing to continue.
“It's just a little bit weird, it's never happened to me”, Safin said of the late foot-fault call. “It's the first time in my life that I'm making foot faults on my second serve.
”I think it's a little bit ridiculous, because I never, ever did this“.
