David Ferrer, Kei Nishikori and Stanislas Wawrkinka each continue their bid at the US Open on Thursday.
David Ferrer (4) vs. Andreas Beck
Germany’s Andreas Beck has an uphill battle when he takes on David Ferrer in the second round. Ferrer, the world number four from Spain, is a talented hard court player. He was the surprise US Open semifinalist last year and he also made the finals of the Masters Cup in November. He has had a disappointing hard court season in 2008, but he should still be able to get past Beck with a minimum of fuss. The German’s record coming into the US Open was 3-5, due to the fact that he accrues most of his ranking points on the Challenger tour. Ferrer in three.
Stanislas Wawrinka (10) vs. Wayne Odesnik
Stanislas Wawrinka has had the best year of his career. Due in large part to excellent results during the clay season (he was the runner-up at the Masters event in Rome), Wawrinka made his way into the top ten for the frist time ever. His hard court results have been less impressive, but his opponent likely does not have the game to trouble Wawrinka. American Wayne Odesnik is ranked 114 in the world at the moment. His best result for the year was a semifinal at the clay event in Houston. Wawrinka should win with ease.
Kei Nishikori vs. Roko Karanusic
Japan’s Kei Nishikori took the tennis world by storm early this spring with a shocking tournament win in Delray Beach, where he stunned James Blake in three sets. Since then, he won a Challenger event in Bermuda, and took a set from Rafael Nadal at Queen’s Club. Roko Karanusic of Croatia is the higher ranked of the two men (100 to Nishikori’s 126) but does not have a clear advantage in terms of form coming into the tournament. Karanusic’s last result was a first round exit at a Challenger tournament. Nishikori should be able to slide through. The Japanese man in four.
