It may take just one major title for Roger Federer to right himself and return to fight for his former No. 1 ranking. That's the opinion of Andy Roddick, who says that reports of the Swiss star's tennis demise are massively exaggerated.
“He's created a bit of a monster for himself”, Roddick, 26 on Saturday at the midway point of the US Open, said of Federer's 12 Grand Slam titles and four and a half years on the top ranking which ended a week ago.
Roddick joins John McEnroe, Jim Courier and other observers in saying that Federer will surely be back. “I think he's got as good a title shot as anybody”, Roddick said of US Open chances for the winner of the last four editions.
“It's tough to play perfect for five years in a row - he's only done it four years in a row. It's a tough situation when you've made 17 straight semi-finals in Slams”.
“If you are not thinking about it, you're being asked about it every day, is bound to go into your head a little bit. One big result and it's turned right around for him”.
“I know that almost any player would take his ”bad“ year (two titles, Olympic doubles gold medal). You have to use a little bit of perspective”.
Courier joined in the discussion in television commentary, advising Federer to rest after his Open is done, perhaps returning for the end-of-season Masters Cup in Shanghai to kick-start is 2009 campaign with a solid performance in November before the holiday break.
