The world numbers four and six help kick off day one in Flushing Meadows.
British hopeful Andy Murray kicks of his 2008 US Open season against the Argentine clay courter Sergio Roitman. Murray comes into the US Open off an impressive North American hard court swing. He advanced to the semifinals at the Masters event in Toronto, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. The following week, he won the Masters in Cincinnati. His impressive hard court form makes him one of the favorites behind Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Sergio Roitman has spent a portion of 2008 on the Challenger circuit trying to keep his ranking up and his playing record for the year is 7-17. The Argentine has his best results on the dirt and a quality hard court opponent spells a first round defeat for Roitman.
David Ferrer also sees first round action on Monday. The newly christened world number four will take on Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina. Vassallo Arguello is currently ranked 111 in the world and has a dismal 4-11 record for the season. Like Roitman, Vassallo Arguello has spent a portion of his year playing on the Challenger tour to keep his ranking up.
Ferrer reached the semifinals of the US Open in 2007; he has been a factor on hard courts in the past, though this summer he has struggled. He lost to Richard Gasquet in straight sets in Toronto and Nicolas Lapentti in the second round in Cincinnati. Despite the drop in form, the Spaniard should be able to get past Vassallo Arguello.
