Andy Murray may have endured an Olympics to forget after exiting the first round in China, but his reputation as the Cincinnati champion after lifting his first career Masters title is proceeding him at the US Open.
The world No. 6 Scot stands on 10/1 odds to lift the title at what he has always called his favorite major. Murray's potential is high, but a dream trophy will be a huge ask for a player whose best showing at Flushing Meadows was the fourth round two years ago.
Murray's chances of success have dimmed slightly at this edition after being drawn into the same half as in-form Argentine teenager Juan Martin Del Potro - winner of his last four events - and Rafael Nadal, the top seed.
“Murray showed in Cincinnati that he has what it takes to beat the best, but it's going to be a stiff ask getting past Nadal in the quarter-fials”, said a spokesman for Ladbroke's of London.
Nadal is a healthy 11/8 to pick up where he left off at the Olympics, while third-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic's chances dropping for 5/2 after landing in the bottom half with four-time champion Roger Federer.
Wimbledon form may be a guide to New York for punters, with the Williams sisters the top picks on the women's side two months after they played the All England club final.
