Ivo Karlovic overcomes John Isner in three sets to reach the third round of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. Next up for Karlovic is Luka Gregorc.
Ivo Karlovic came out on top in the battle of the big men, defeating John Isner 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 on Monday night in New Haven. It took Karlovic one hour and 57 minutes to book his place in the third round, where he will take on surprising qualifier Luka Gregorc.
Breaks were expected to be few and far between in this showdown, and that proved to be just the case in the first set. Neither Karlovic nor Isner even had a single break point as a tiebreaker was needed to decide things. Always fond of 'breakers, the 6'9'' American took it seven points to four.
Undaunted, Karlovic stormed back in set two. He lost only five points in five service games, whereas he took 16 points in four Isner service games. Isner saved four of five break points, but the one he didn't was enough for the 6'10'' Croat to level the match at a set apiece.
With Isner serving first to open the third, no break points were surrendered as the final set progressed to 4-4. That's when Isner cracked. He led 30-15 before some untimely missed first serves allowed the No. 2 seed to win the last three points of the game to break and take a 5-4 lead. Karlovic promptly served out the match in routine fashion.
It will be the first-ever head-to-head meeting between the heavily-favored Karlovic and Gregorc, a Slovak ranked 434th in the world.
