  • Ginepri, Cilic, Seppi advance in New Haven

     - Robby Ginepri ousts No. 12 seed Agustin Calleri at the Pilot Pen tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Other seeds fare better, however, with Marin Cilic and Andreas Seppi moving on.

Marin Cilic d. Viktor Troicki 2-1, ret.

Trocki, the runner-up in Washington, D.C. last week, suffered visibly with a lower back problem in his title match against Juan Martin Del Potro. Somehow the Serb turned right back around without a day of rest to defeat Alex Bogomolov Jr. in three sets on Monday, but he could not duplicate the effort in round two. Cilic actually had to save a break point in one of his two service games whereas Troicki held comfortably for 1-1, but still Troicki could not continue after the 2-1 changeover. The sixth-seeded 6'6'' Croat moves on to the third round where he will take on No. 11 seed Jurgen Melzer.

    Andreas Seppi d. Potito Starace 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Seppi jumped out to an early lead in this all-Italian affair, but serving at 46 percent in the opening set contributed to his dropping serve three times, allowing Starace to storm ahead. A greatly-improved first serve, however, allowed the No. 7 seed to get back in the match. Seppi saved both of the break points he faced in set two and converted the only one he had against Starace. The final set came down to Seppi starting to get a much better read on his opponent's serve. Seppi won barely less than half of his first-serve return points and won 60 percent of his second-serve return points and two resulting breaks proved to be the difference. In another all-Italian matchup, Seppi will meet Fabio Fognini, a three-set winner over No. 10 seed Simone Bolelli, in the third round.

    Robby Ginepri d. Agustin Calleri 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Except for a minor second-set hiccup, Ginepri controlled the match most of the way. He secured a quick break against Calleri early on and cruised to a one set advantage. The Argentine, however, turned things around by breaking Ginepri early in the second and he saved all four break points he faced to prevent his opponent from getting back on serve. Another change in momentum occurred at the start of the third, with Ginepri breaking for a 2-0 lead. The American never looked back and rolled to victory for a spot in the third round. Calleri's chances of winning this were crushed by serving 44 percent and throwing in eight double-faults. Ginepri will battle Mischa Zverev for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Other winners included Marc Gicquel, Jesse Levine, Steve Darcis, and Victor Hansecu.
