    8/18/08 7:20 PM | Johan Lindahl
     - Tennis great John McEnroe has gone out on a limb with a prediction that Andy Murray will end the 2008 ATP campaign on the fringes of the elite.

“It would be hard for me to make an argument that Murray could win the US Open”, said the longtime television commentator and still a regular on the senior tour at age 49.

“But he's taken some serious steps in the right direction”, Mac said of the 21-year-old Scot who lifted his game with a title this month in Cincinnati.

“He's definitely stronger, and fitter and I think he's going to end the year as fourth in the world”.

Murray will need to come good in New York starting on Monday after flying back to the US following a first-round Beijing Olympic disappointment, put down in part to poor preparation for the hot and humid conditions.

Murray is using his emotion in a more positive way and it's helping. He's sixth in the world and has managed to turn negative energy into something more positive”.

“That's not easy to do but when you can do it, it's a great feeling”.

Added the veteran talent-spotter: “After the top three, Murray is the fourth guy”.
