Roger Federer has finally felt the love as Beijing Olympic frustration evaporated with a gold medal in doubles alongside Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka.
The formerly dominant Swiss who drops to second in the world as the Games end behind Rafael Nadal, has made a small step in renewing his season with the medal, his first in three Olympics dating to Sydney, 2000.
Federer and Wawrinka could not contain themselves after beating Swedes Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson in four sets. For Federer, lifting doubles honours after 12 Grand Slam titles was unique. “I can't just hug a stranger when I win singles”.
“In singles you're all alone on the court. You win, you sit down - this is quite a surreal moment”, he said in victory. “It's a joy to share it with someone else whom I like very much”.
“Stan and I had a great two weeks, this is different to anything I've ever gone through before”.
Federer wrapped up his Games in style after starting just over a week ago by carrying the flag for the Swiss team in opening ceremonies. He will now regroup before heading immediately to New York to prepare for the start of the US Open in just over a week.
