  • Troicki stuns Roddick in Legg Mason quarters

Troicki stuns Roddick in Legg Mason quarters
Viktor Troicki storms back from a 6-0 first-set embarrassment to shock Andy Roddick on Friday night in Washington, D.C. He is joined in the semifinals by Tommy Haas and Igor Kunitsyn.

    Tommy Haas d. Alejandro Falla 7-5, 6-1

This was a tale of two matches in one. Falla, a heavy underdog, surged to a 4-1 lead with two breaks thanks to some incredible shot-making along with a flurry of terrible errors by Haas. He won one of the next 11 games and two of 12. It was as if Haas just flipped a switch when he got down 4-1, perhaps realizing five games into the proceedings that he had a match on his hands with the Columbian. After rising from the dead to somehow win the opening set, Haas took care of the second frame of play with ease by winning all 16 of his first-serve points. The German led 5-0 before Falla finally got on the scoreboard, but that was inconsequential as Haas served out the match. The No. 4 seed will take on second-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro in the semifinals.

    Viktor Troicki d. Andy Roddick 0-6, 6-2, 6-4

Roddick was let off the hook by Eduardo Schwank in his second-round match, but this time it was Roddick who let his opponent off the hook. One day after saving two match points against Schwank, Roddick pounded Troicki 6-0 in the first only to see the little known Serb storm back for an improbable upset. The American's serve let him down immensely over the final two sets, but it was really Troicki's play that turned the tide. He eliminated his unforced errors almost entirely while coming up with unlikely winners from all areas of the court. Troicki broke Roddick at 3-3 in the third and finished off the No. 1 seed with two easy service games. “When you play a Top 10 player in the world you know you are not the favorite, but I played him in Miami and I had my chances there, so I knew I could win,” Troicki explained.

Igor Kunitsyn d. Somdev Dev Varman 6-4, 6-1

There will be no Isner-esque run to the final for Dev Varman, whose magic and hot streak flamed out against a rock-solid Kunitsyn. The two-time reigning NCAA singles champion, Dev Varman won four Futures and Challengers events right out of college and--after finally losing a match--won three matches over the weekend to qualify for the Legg Mason main draw. He was not the same player on Friday night, however. Dev Varman looked tired and frustrated that unforced errors were creeping into his game. Kunitsyn's errors were few and far between and the Russian ran his opponent ragged with mixes of power, slices, and incredible angles. Kunitsyn, who saved a match point in his second-round victory over Fabio Fognini, will meet Troicki in the semifinals.
