  • Roddick leads charge into Legg Mason second round

    8/13/08 3:15 PM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick leads charge into Legg Mason second round Andy Roddick moves on in Washington D.C. with a straight-set victory over Ramon Delgado. Fabio Fognini and Juan Martin Del Potro join him in the second round.

Fabio Fognini d. Marat Safin 7-5, ret.

Safin called it quits with a neck injury after getting broken at 5-5 and allowing Fognini to serve out the set in routine fashion. According to Safin, he sustained the injury on the second point of the match and “should have stopped earlier.” Nonetheless, the Russian stormed to a 3-0 lead before letting his opponent back in the match. He called for an injury timeout at the 3-2 changeover and never looked quite the same after than that, other than resorting to his old racket-breaking tricks.

    Andy Roddick d. Ramon Delgado 6-3, 7-6(4)

The proceedings were routine for Roddick most of the time in this one despite a solid performance by qualifier Delgado. At 5-4 in the second set, however, Roddick surrendered his serve for the first time of the set. That eventually forced a tiebreaker, which Roddick took care of with little trouble. The top-seeded American fired 21 aces, but donated eight double-faults and was broken twice. He also won just half of his second-serve points. Roddick will meet Eduardo Schwank, a three-set winner over Sebastien Grosjean, in round two and his serve better see marked improvement.

Juan Martin Del Potro d. Jesse Levine 6-2, 6-3

Del Potro has won three straight tournaments, including last week in Los Angeles, and 15 consecutive matches and showed why on Tuesday night. Levine played well and still came out on the losing end of a brutal 6-2, 6-3 scoreline. The 19-year-old Argentine simply overpowered Levine with huge--and consistent--groundstrokes off both wings. Del Potro had lapses on serve in each set, but both times he fell down a break, he responded with two consecutive breaks of his own to take command. Dudi Sela will be the next to test his luck against Del Potro on Wednesday night.
