     - The bottom section of the draw remains largely intact, with one major exception.

The big story in the first round of the Olympics was Cincinnati champion Andy Murray being knocked out by the player from Taipei, Yen-Hsun Lu. Murray missed many opportunites in the first set. He served for the match in the first set at 5-4, but got broken by Lu. He again had set points on Lu’s next service game at 6-5, which he failed to convert. Lu eventually took the first set in the tiebreak 7-6(5).

Though his energy was flagging in the second, Murray kept up with Lu for most of the set. At 4-4 on Lu’s serve, Murray had 0-40 to go up a break, but once again failed to convert. The missed chances seemed to take a toll on the Scotsman, who was broken in his next service game.

Lleyton Hewitt also advanced on Monday in a tight 7-5, 7-6(2) victory over the veteran Swede, Jonas Bjorkman. The Swede had a 5-2 lead in the second set, but could not hold onto as Hewitt scraped his way to a tiebreaker. The Australian champion and former world number one has never lost to Bjorkman, and perhaps captialized on that to hold onto his slight edge on Monday. Hewitt will play Rafael Nadal in the second round.

American Sam Querrey could not get it done against Igor Andreev; he lost in straight sets to the Russian clay courter. Andreev takes on the big-serving Frenchman Michael Llodra in the second round.
