Andy Roddick received support from close friend James Blake over his decision to pull out of the Olympics after receiving criticisim in some quarters
Roddick competed in Athens 2004 losing in the 3rd round to eventual silver medallist Fernando Gonzalez and would have been in contention for the medals this time around
However he opted to focus his energies on preparing for the US Open, drawing the opinion that for some tennis players, the Olympics isn't as special as it is for other athletes. Lleyton Hewitt seemed to reinforce that view in an interview yesterday, explaining how some see the Olympics as just one of 5 major events this year
However Blake said that after Roddick's injury-ridden summer, he made the decision which was best for himself “I totally understand his decision to prepare for the US Open, especially with the injury he picked up in Cincinnati. If he goes out and wins the US Open and gains a little confidence in not coming out here and changing time zones and dealing with the pressures of the Olympics, he made the right decision.”
