With the Olympics just a few days away, this year's event in LA is unusually low-key with most of the stars across the Pacific Ocean in Bejing. So Fernando Verdasco finds himself as 2nd seed and with every opportunity of winning his first hard court title
Verdasco has launched himself up to 12 in the world over the past 2 months with a title in Umag, a final appearance at Nottingham and last 16 runs at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The Spaniard's undoubted flair is finally landing him big scalps though it says everything for his country's strength in depth that he's still not an automatic choice for their Davis Cup side
Florent Serra is heading in the opposite direction, slipping down towards 100 again. He ground out a big win over Ben Becker in the first round of Cincinnati last week but then had the unenviable task of being Nadal's first opponent. He proved little more than cannon fodder managing just the 1 game and around 50 minutes on court
Verdasco should progress and looking ahead in the draw Mardy Fish will most likely await in the quarters. If he comes through that then either Moya or Del Potro (the man on fire on the clay last month) will probably be present in the semis. Verdasco has never made an outdoor hard court final, and each of those mentioned opponents are very much beatable for him in this form.

Did you know that... Boris Becker never won an ATP-title on clay.
