  • Karlovic eases through while Soderling and Kohlschreiber advance

Karlovic eases through while Soderling and Kohlschreiber advance The early rounds of Cincinnati have taken place and so far, no huge surprises have occured.

Phillip Kohlschreiber took out 28 year old qualifier Michael Yani. Yani spent most of his career on the futures tour but recently won a challenger in Yuba City. He played at Duke University but was one of those guys that was good, just not consistent or powerful enough to make it on the main tour. Kohlschreiber routined him 6-3, 6-4.

Robin Soderling, meanwhile, bagelled and dismissed Frenchman Julien Benneteau. A nice revenge considering what happened at the French Open. Soderling is a fine player on fast hard court surfaces and destroyed Bennetau here. Soderling never gave Benneteau anything to work with and made a quick and easy job of taking him out of the tournament.

Ivo Karlovic, the 16 seed, bombed serves and beat the Brazilian Bellucci. 18 aces and 88% of his service points won tells you all you needed to know. Bellucci, however, had 5 break points against the Karlovic serve but was never able to break. Ivo, on the other hand, played Bellucci's service game smart, knowing the Brazilian would self-destruct by attempting a big winner from a disadvantageous position.
