Big-serving American Sam Querrey makes his 2008 Cincinnati debut against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.
Sam Querrey is most at home on fast hardcourts. He has a huge first serve and his ground strokes are not bad considering his size (198 cm tall). Querrey is currently ranked 46 in the world and he has a healthy 22-17 record in 2008.
Paul-Henri Mathieu, ranked 23 in the world, is rather well-known for his fantastic wins and also for terrible mental collapses mid-match. He has not had a good run since reaching the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Last week in Toronto, he lost to Robby Ginepri in the first round in three sets.
Based on current form, Querrey would have to be considered the favorite going into the match. He made the semifinals in Indianapolis two weeks ago, losing to eventual winner Gilles Simon in three sets. Querrey lost in the first round to Marat Safin, but he will have the hometown backing of the crowd this time. If Querrey serves well, he has the capability of beating Mathieu. Querrey in three.
