  • Nadal recovers to defeat Levine while Andreev takes down Berdych

     - After starting slow and going down 1-4 in the first set, Rafael Nadal was able to right his ship to get a first round win. Igor Andreev ousted Tomas Berdych in 3.

The Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion started his first hardcourt match since Miami slowly. He was down 4-1 to Levine in the opening set and was playing quite horrid. After saving break points to go down 5-1, he turned it on. He won 5 games in a row to win the set. Levine, after being broken to get the set back on serve, looked a bit downtrodden and confidence shaken. He really looked like he could pull this off in that first set, but once Nadal got rolling, Levine could do nothing. He awakened the beast and lost the second set and match 6-2.

Tomas Berdych disappoints once again. A chance for him to replicate his Toronto 2006 victory over Nadal in the same round here blown. Andreev is quite a tricky player to play due to a strange combination of a big forehand and good speed around the court. It was a bit windy and we all know that wind is Berdych kryptonite. Andreev's ultra-spinny ball combined with the wind seemed to throw Berdych off-balance a bit. Late in the third, it appeared that Berdych was going to salvage this win, but Andreev pulled it out. Igor has had a good few weeks and this scalp is a nice one to add.
