Argentine clay courter Guillermo Canas will take on the hard hitting Swede Robin Söderling, as first round action continues in Toronto.
Guillermo Canas is most likely going to have a difficult time handling Robin Söderling. The Swede has a good game for a quick surface, though his results tend to be up and down. Canas is at his most effective on clay or slow hard courts, neither of which describes the surface in Toronto. Canas wins tennis matches by retrieving ball after ball and waiting for his opponent to either make a mistake or get out of position. Robin Söderling will most likely not give him the opportunity for either.
Söderling is an ultra-aggressive player. He is one of the few players on tour that is still comfortable serve-and-volleying. He likes to end points early, using a combination of his big serve and hard, flat forehands. This kind of game gives Canas particular difficulty because it does not allow him to get any kind of rhythm in a match.
The Swede will be the likely winner. Canas has not had particular success even on clay in 2008. His ranking has dropped to 59 in the world and he has failed to reach a final. His best result, strangely enough, has been on the grass of s’Hertogenbosch where he reached the semifinals. Soderling in 2.
