  • Berdych and Levine ease through

    7/22/08 10:45 PM | Jonathan Morgan
     - Jesse Levine and Tomas Berdych, both members of the bottom quarter of the draw, had easy wins in Toronto.

Tomas Berdych, who hasn't done anything of note in quite some time, blasted away Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-1. He threw down 12 aces and saved the two break points he faced. Berdych simply looks at home on a hard court. He is good on grass and so so on clay, but on hard he seems like a different player. Good footing, solid striking, and a predictable bounce all contribute to his prowess on this surface. Nieminen seemed like a sheep out for slaughter as Berdych demolished him. The winner of the Andreev/Monfils match will be his next opponent.

Young American qualifier Jesse Levine also won, taking out wildcard Canadian Peter Polansky in straights. Levine didn't have to do much in this match as Polansky sprayed tons of errors. Levine also wasn't sharp as he was broken twice in the first set. The difference was that Levine was making errors as he went for winners. Polansky made errors from neutral rallies. Both players played better in the second set, but Levine was able to hold an early break to eventually get the win, saving break points in the final game and hitting two big serves to finish the match. He plays Nadal in the next round.
